Position Summary

The Sr Design and Applications Engineer will be responsible for the detailed design of valves, valve components, and related water/wastewater flow control products, inventing and developing new approaches to mechanical and electrical design of Red Valve products. The position will also be responsible for supporting the continuous improvement of legacy products. 


This position will use research and analysis to make data-based decisions to deliver key strategies, objectives, process improvements and metric alignment that will result in cost reduction, cost avoidance, risk management and service/quality improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Design engineering:

  • Review designs/consulting engineer plans/specifications for compliance with engineering principles, industry and company standards, and customer specifications.
  • Complete complex mechanical and hydraulic design of valves and oversee the design work of less senior members of the Engineering team.
  • Generate standard, custom, and application-specific analyses of valve products.
  • Run control valve modeling and sizing programs to select the appropriate valve, trim and actuator based on application-specific hydraulic conditions
  • Update the modeling and sizing programs based on new test data
  • Perform statistical analysis of in-house or field test data and develop predictive models/spreadsheets based on the analysis.
  • Perform stress analysis on valves and components.
Solution provider:
  • Solve complex manufacturing and supply issues concerning the interpretation of drawings, manufacturing methods, and material requirements, and to identify the root cause.
  • Partner with sales on complex projects to assist in selecting the appropriate product(s) to meet the customers’ needs.
  • Provide technical support, including site visits when required, to assist in field installation or troubleshooting of valves.
  • Leader in new product development/current product enhancement:
  • Design and engineer new products, including the preparation of a product plan, channel, pro/con, financial, and manufacturing capabilities analysis for the new product(s)
  • R&D, prototype, and test new products, including evaluating/testing new product claims, evaluate patent ability, and evaluate pilot production runs.
  • Assist with product introduction to marketplace
  • Identify and implement design changes to existing products that will improve performance, lower cost, and/or provide a competitive advantage.
Continuing education and industry expert:
  • Perform research to stay current on new applications and technologies to determine applicability to our existing products or use in developing new products.
  • Submit and deliver technical papers and presentations at local, state, or national trade conferences.
  • Attend and delivery technical seminars at representative sales meetings.
  • Provide technical training and support to customers, including internal and external sales organization, other business unit personnel, vendors, consulting engineers, contractors, and end users.
  • Participate in Red Valve’s exhibits at local, state, and national trade conferences.
  • Participates in special projects as required

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance to the Company policies, the Code of Ethical Business Conduct and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education
Bachelor’s degree (B.S./B.A.) or equivalent from a college or university in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering (preference is Mechanical) with ten years of mechanical/design engineering experience.
Licensure as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training is not required but is desirable

Skills/Experience

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in a low volume high mix product portfolio manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years in the following areas (preferred experience in all areas)
  • Fluid dynamics
  • Casting design and foundry practice
  • Elastomer design and related manufacturing processes
  • Manufacturing machining processes
  • Welding practices and principles
  • Stress analysis
  • Strong Project Management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with little or no supervision (expert)
  • Strong leadership and mentoring (expert)
  • Solid understanding of Bills of Material (BOM)
  • Experience using AutoCAD (intermediate)
  • Experience working with and supporting various certifications, both domestic and international: ISO, CE, NSF etc. (intermediate)
  • Broad exposure to various industries and markets (intermediate)
  • Practical knowledge of Lean business practices, specifically root cause/counter measure (intermediate)
  • Is experienced with product failures and can determine liability associated with product failure. (intermediate)
  • Manage metrics with action plans and bowlers in strict accordance with the Strategic Deployment Process.

Travel
Some travel may be required, up to 10% of the time (domestic and international).
